Tether Says It Holds 150,000 Bitcoin — 50,000 More Than Its Own Reserve Report Shows

Bottom line up front: Tether bitcoin holdings have swelled to roughly 150,000 BTC — about $11.5 billion at current prices — and that is a full 50,000 coins more than the stablecoin issuer’s own Q3 reserve report implies. Somebody’s been shopping.

CEO Paolo Ardoino revealed the number during a keynote at the Plan Bitcoin Forum in Lugano, Switzerland, delivering it with the dry understatement reserved for people who own eleven figures of the hardest asset on earth: “We have give or take 150,000 bitcoin ourselves. It’s not much, but it’s honest work.”

Where the extra 50,000 bitcoin come from

Tether’s Q3 reserve attestation — signed off by BDO Italia on October 30 — lists $8.37 billion of bitcoin, roughly 100,060 coins as of September 30. Ardoino’s 150,000 figure therefore implies about 50,000 BTC sitting somewhere the attestation does not reach: plausibly Tether Investments or another affiliate outside the stablecoin reserve perimeter. Ardoino did not say which entity holds the coins, where they are custodied, or when they were acquired.

Tether bitcoin holdings: what we still don’t know

The company has not published wallets, and the gap has not been independently audited. That matters because the reserve attestation covers USDT backing, not the corporate treasury — the same distinction that lets Tether report record profits while its bitcoin line stays modest. Until an auditor puts a signature on the full 150,000, the honest reading is: CEO says 150,000, paperwork says 100,060, difference unverified.

A rounding error in the bigger reserve picture

Even at $11.5 billion, bitcoin remains a minority slice of Tether’s reserves. US Treasury bills dominate the pile at roughly $132.4 billion per the Q3 report — which explains why Tether is, structurally, a bitcoin bull with a Treasury habit.

The buying policy itself is old news: since May 2023 Tether has allocated up to 15% of net realized operating profits to bitcoin purchases and self-custodies the coins rather than using third-party custodians. Bitcoin Treasuries records 96,184 BTC at the end of 2025, with roughly 3,900 added over the following nine months — so the jump to 150,000 suggests either a much faster pace this year or a reclassification of existing coins.

The takeaway

For USDC watchers and rival issuers, the disclosure is a reminder that Tether’s balance sheet extends well past the attestation boundary. For bitcoin holders, it is one more corporate treasury to track alongside Strategy and the miners. For everyone else, it is confirmation that “give or take” now has a unit of measurement, and that unit is 50,000 bitcoin.

Reporting: CoinDesk, Bitcoin Magazine and Tether’s Q3 2026 reserve report. The 150,000 BTC figure is a company statement, not an audited number.
