SWI Group Raises €800M to Turn Genesis Bitcoin Miner Into AI Data Center Operator

SWI Group (Euronext Amsterdam: SWICH) has raised €800 million — about $894 million — from institutional investors at a €6.1 billion valuation, and it is not planning to mine a single additional bitcoin with the money. The October 12 raise funds the conversion of Genesis Digital Assets, the former FTX-backed miner SWI acquired out of bankruptcy and renamed SWI Digital, into a Genesis Digital AI data-center operator.

From hashrate to hyperscale

SWI is repurposing Genesis Digital’s United States and Swedish facilities for AI and high-performance computing workloads, while divesting the unit’s sites in Kazakhstan. The company had picked up roughly 40% of Genesis Digital in June 2026 for $500 million, completing the acquisition in August with 70% of voting rights. CEO Max-Hervé George told the Wall Street Journal he has "zero interest" in bitcoin mining — a sentence that would have been heresy on any miner’s earnings call three years ago.

Why the Genesis Digital AI pivot matters

The thesis is straightforward: the scarce asset is no longer hashrate, it’s power and pipes. Miners spent the cycle accumulating megawatts and grid interconnections; AI workloads now pay far better per kilowatt-hour for the same concrete. Genesis Digital’s rack space becomes the shovels-and-picks play for the AI era, and the €800 million raise is the balance sheet to make the switch before the market prices it in.

For the broader mining sector, SWI’s haul is a signal that capital markets will fund the pivot — but only for companies willing to say the quiet part out loud: the future of "mining" may have very little to do with bitcoin.
