Zcash NU7 Upgrade Goes Live Today: 25-Second Blocks and the End of Sprout

Bottom line up front: The Zcash NU7 upgrade activates today at block 3,543,405, cutting block times from 75 seconds to 25, pulling the plug on version 4 transactions, and — if you’re still holding coins in the ancient Sprout pool — potentially on your funds too.

It’s the biggest mechanical shake-up Zcash has had since the testnet run-through we covered in October, and this time it’s the mainnet’s turn. The upgrade bundles three changes that land at once, which is either efficient engineering or a very bold scheduling decision, depending on how node operator you are.

What changes with the Zcash NU7 upgrade

Faster blocks (ZIP-218). The target block interval drops from 75 seconds to 25 seconds — three times the confirmation rhythm. Exchanges, wallets and explorers see pending transactions clear faster; miners and pools need to keep up with the new cadence.

Version 4 transactions disabled. Legacy transaction formats are being retired. Critically, funds still sitting in the Sprout pool — Zcash’s original shielded pool from the 2016 launch — may become unspendable if they aren’t migrated. The upgrade doesn’t confiscate anything; it simply stops recognizing the old format. Anyone who hasn’t moved Sprout funds should do it before activation. Yes, that means checking a wallet you probably haven’t opened since the first Trump administration.

Network Sustainability Mechanism. At least 60% of block fees are removed from circulation, creating a protocol-level burn that shrinks effective supply as usage grows — a fee-burn model that will look familiar to anyone who watched EIP-1559 reshape Ethereum’s economics.

What ZEC holders need to do

Most holders: nothing. Exchanges handle the technical upgrade on their side, and shielded/unshielded balances in current wallets continue unaffected. The operators who do need to act are full-node, indexer and block-explorer runners — the Zebra client’s NU7-capable release (reported as Zebra 7.0.0) should be installed before block 3,543,405. Miss the deadline and your node falls off the network’s consensus path.

One caveat worth stating plainly: the official Zcash NU7 page has at times shown the activation height as unset, while secondary reporting pins block 3,543,405 to November 5. The date can shift slightly if blocks arrive faster or slower than target — treat today as the scheduled window, not a launch-at-noon promise.

Why this upgrade matters beyond the changelog

Zcash arrives at this upgrade with unusual momentum: a Winklevoss-filed Zcash ETF sitting at the SEC since October, privacy coins back in the headlines, and a fee-burn that gives ZEC a structural scarcity story to match the privacy one. The NU7 upgrade is the network telling its own story in code — faster, leaner, and decisively done with its own archaeology.

Set your block explorer countdown accordingly. Sprout pool, it’s been real.

Reporting: Zcash NU7 upgrade documentation, Zebra release notes and secondary activation-height reporting. Activation is scheduled, not timestamped.
