Coinbase Q3 Earnings: Net Income Jumps 66% as Prediction Markets Cross $200 Million

Coinbase Q3 earnings are a masterclass in reading the footnotes: net income rose 66% year over year to $718.7 million while total revenue fell about 35% to $1.22 billion. Diluted EPS hit $2.51 versus $1.50 a year ago. The catch? Roughly $715 million of that profit is a non-operating gain on crypto held for investment – essentially the quarter’s entire bottom line arrived from the balance sheet, not the income statement.

Where the operating business actually stood

Transaction revenue dropped 44% to $590 million in the quarter ended September 30. Subscription and services held up better, accounting for 49% of net revenue. Coinbase reported its 14th consecutive all-time high of USDC held on the platform and an all-time high in Coinbase One subscribers – the recurring-revenue flank is doing quiet work while trading volume takes a breather.

Prediction markets: the actual bright spot

Coinbase put prediction markets past a $200 million annualized run rate, with traders up 60% quarter over quarter. It’s a company-reported figure rather than recognized GAAP revenue, but the trajectory explains why exchanges keep racing each other into event contracts – and why the sector is suddenly on every earnings call’s highlight reel.

The reading for markets

A 66% profit jump powered by a crypto mark-up is a sentiment number as much as a financial one: Coinbase’s holdings gained value right as the market chewed through $80,000 Bitcoin. Strip the non-operating gain out and the story is a leaner exchange – lower trading revenue, higher mix from subs and USDC – waiting for volume to return.

What to watch next

Whether prediction markets and Coinbase One can keep compounding while transaction revenue rebuilds, and whether the Q4 guide leans on the “everything exchange” expansion. For now, Coinbase Q3 earnings deliver the rare headline where revenue down a third still prints a beat – as long as you read past the first line.
