Marqeta and Coinbase Partner on Stablecoin Card Payments

Marqeta Coinbase Stablecoin Cards Move to Base Settlement

The Marqeta Coinbase stablecoin cards collaboration, announced October 16, 2026, takes stablecoin settlement out of the crypto ghetto and drops it straight into one of the card industry’s core processing stacks. Marqeta is embedding Coinbase’s Base-based settlement into its existing issuing and processing platform, letting enterprises offer stablecoin-backed cards without building crypto plumbing of their own.

The deal expands an existing relationship – Marqeta already issues crypto-backed cards for Coinbase – into infrastructure territory. End users will be able to hold stablecoin balances and spend them at any merchant that accepts cards, while businesses can fund card programs around the clock. Coinbase handles custody of stablecoin balances, digital-asset-to-fiat conversion and on-chain settlement on Base; Marqeta keeps its day job of bank and network relationships, issuance and processing.

"As we build out the complete stack for stablecoin-backed cards, expanding our relationship with Coinbase was a natural next step," said Anthony Peculic, Marqeta’s chief strategy officer. Coinbase’s head of infrastructure products, Alec Lovett, framed the collaboration as combining "our stablecoin payment rails with their powerful issuing and processing capabilities to deliver real-time global transactions."

Financial terms and the general-availability timeline for Marqeta’s broader customer base remain undisclosed, as does the specific stablecoin – or stablecoins – that will back the cards. What is disclosed is the market context: stablecoin payment volume exceeded $400 billion in the first eight months of 2026, Visa has moved stablecoin cross-border payments into commercial production, and Mastercard picked up stablecoin card-issuing rails through its BVNK acquisition. With the GENIUS Act taking effect January 18, 2027, the compliance runway and the product runway are finally pointing the same direction.

For Marqeta, the processor-layer model is the point. Rather than competing to become the consumer-facing crypto brand, it is selling abstraction: enterprises get stablecoin settlement as a feature of a platform they already use. Stablecoins are becoming a backend option that functions alongside fiat – less a revolution than a quiet expansion of the settlement menu, which is exactly how the biggest payment shifts usually land.
