THORChain Exec: Tether Freezing USDT Vaults Was Unexplained, Then Reversed

Tether freezing USDT vaults belonging to THORChain turned a quiet Friday into an unplanned outage for the cross-chain protocol: technical co-founder Chad Barraford revealed that the stablecoin issuer blacklisted four of the network’s vault addresses, locking roughly 1.45 million USDT in combined funds — then reversed the freeze hours later without explanation.

Barraford laid out the timeline in a post on X. Four THORChain vault addresses were blacklisted, freezing about 1.45 million USDT across the network’s funds. Roughly two hours later, every address was unfrozen and trading resumed. Before the reversal landed, he made it clear THORChain had no idea why any of it had happened: “We don’t know why this choice was made and have had no comms with USDT before this action and are actively reaching out to have a conversation. We hope that this was made in error / misunderstanding.”

How Tether freezing USDT vaults played out

The episode is a small but pointed reminder of where the leverage sits in “permissionless” markets: THORChain’s vaults run on-chain, but the assets sitting in them can be immobilized off-chain by a single issuer decision. No exploit, no hack, no bridge drain — just a blacklist flag, four wallets, and a two-hour trading pause. Cointelegraph reached out to both Tether and THORChain for details on the incident and did not receive an immediate response from either side.

The timing is awkward for Tether, which is already answering tougher questions elsewhere. This week, Democrats in the Senate put Cantor Fitzgerald over its Tether ties under the microscope, citing concerns over USDT risks — a reminder that the issuer’s ability to freeze funds cuts both ways: it is a law-enforcement tool and a centralization talking point in the same breath.

Freezes keep landing Tether in court

Unexplained reversals are only part of the picture; explained ones are still generating lawsuits. Earlier this week, cross-border payments platform Conduit Technology filed suit against Tether, alleging the company froze $2.76 million worth of USDT in a wallet tied to a 2024 investigation by Brazilian authorities. In August, two Thai nationals sued Tether over an alleged $42.4 million freeze carried out after what they described as an “informal request” from US Homeland Security Investigations.

Pattern recognition is easy here: large USDT freezes tied to government requests, contested in court after the fact. What remains missing, in the THORChain case specifically, is any statement of cause at all.

What THORChain wants from Tether now

For now, THORChain’s ask is procedural rather than legal: a conversation, an explanation, and ideally a channel that exists before the next freeze rather than after it. For holders, the practical takeaway is the old one wearing new clothes — self-custody protects you from exchanges, but a blacklisted USDT balance protects you from nothing. When the dust settled, trading was back and the funds were whole; the explanation never arrived.
