Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the United States is about to pull off another mega Iran crypto seizure – and if his numbers hold, this one clears the billion-dollar mark in a single week.
Bessent made the claim at the Newsmax NPolicy Summit in Washington, telling Greta Van Susteren that Treasury is “probably gonna seize a billion dollars of crypto this week,” adding: “We know where it is, and we are isolating them.” Probably is doing some heavy lifting in that sentence – the seizure is announced intent, not a completed transfer – but the track record behind the threat is not hypothetical.
Isolation Campaign Moves From Sanctions to Wallets
The planned Iran crypto seizure sits inside what Bessent calls an “absolute isolation campaign” against Tehran, layered on top of sanctions, naval blockades, air-travel restrictions and land-route closures. Crypto has become the campaign’s favorite pressure point: OFAC designated exchanges facilitating transfers to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in August 2026, and Tether has frozen roughly $550 million in USDT tied to Iran sanctions this year alone, including $344 million in April.
Bessent previously claimed about $500 million of Iranian-linked crypto was seized in April, with the cumulative figure reaching roughly $1 billion by May. Whether this week’s announced haul is additive or just the same scoreboard getting a fresh paint job remains undisclosed – Treasury did not name the assets, exchanges or wallets involved.
What the Iran Crypto Seizure Means for Exchanges
The practical takeaway for platforms is blunt: sanctioned-flow exposure is now a seizure risk, not just a fines risk. Stablecoin issuers have proven repeatedly that they can freeze balances mid-flight, and Treasury appears increasingly comfortable turning addresses into evidence exhibits. For an industry that spent years arguing it was too fast to confiscate, the 2026 answer is awkward: it wasn’t.
Watch for the formal announcement – if and when the wallets move, the on-chain record will be public long before the press release.
