SPAR Becomes First Swiss Supermarket to Accept Crypto Payments

The Swiss supermarket chain SPAR has become the first major grocery retailer in the country to accept cryptocurrencies for payments. Customers can now pay for their groceries at over 100 SPAR locations by scanning a QR code with their digital wallets.

The payment system, powered by DFX.swiss and Binance Pay’s infrastructure, instantly converts over 100 different cryptocurrencies, including stablecoins, into Swiss francs. This process is completed with no gas fees and significantly lower transaction costs for the merchant—about two-thirds less than traditional card payments. SPAR plans to expand this service to 300 stores in the coming months.

This move is seen as a significant step toward the mass adoption of crypto in daily life, proving that digital assets are moving beyond just trading. It aligns with Switzerland’s broader strategy to embrace tokenized payments and signals that crypto is becoming a mainstream and frictionless payment method.
