Coinbase Opens Agentic Payments to Every Business Customer as x402 Machine Economy Scales

Coinbase agentic payments reached a milestone this week as the exchange rolled out the ability for all of its business customers to accept transactions initiated by AI agents, extending a bet that chief executives at the company have called their most high-conviction wager on where the internet economy is heading. The move, timed to the first anniversary of Coinbase Business, turns a niche developer capability into a standard feature for corporate accounts and pushes machine-to-machine commerce closer to the mainstream.

Agentic payments are transactions initiated not by a person clicking a button but by software acting autonomously, paying for API access, data feeds or compute in stablecoins that settle in seconds through a single HTTP request. Coinbase’s implementation runs on the x402 protocol, an open payment standard the company developed and incubated.

How Coinbase agentic payments work

The x402 protocol revives a long-dormant piece of web plumbing, the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code, and turns it into a live settlement rail. When an AI agent requests a paid resource, the server responds with a price; the agent pays in stablecoins and receives the resource, all within a single request-response cycle. For a business, accepting these payments means it can sell data, tools or services directly to autonomous software without invoicing, subscriptions or card networks in the loop.

By opening this to every Coinbase Business customer, the exchange is betting that a large share of future online transactions will be conducted between machines rather than humans, and that stablecoins are the natural currency for them.

The numbers behind the machine economy

The scale is already meaningful. On Base, Coinbase’s Layer 2 network, agentic payments crossed 20 million transfers in a single 90-day window, and roughly 169 million agentic transactions had been processed as of July 2026. Coinbase has also noted a symbolic threshold: for the first time, agentic traffic from AI agents overtook human traffic on Base’s documentation pages, a small but telling sign of who, or what, is now reading the manual.

An industry standard forming around x402

Coinbase is not building alone. The x402 Foundation has grown to around 40 members, with premier participants including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Stripe. Separately, Visa, Stripe and Google have joined a large open-source effort to let AI agents pay one another, and firms such as Bitwave have launched agentic-finance product suites aimed at the accounting and controls layer that autonomous spending will require. The competitive question is shifting from who issues the tokens to who controls the standards, settlement and distribution for machine commerce.

What it means

The significance of Coinbase agentic payments is less about any single transaction and more about infrastructure lock-in. If autonomous agents become routine buyers of digital services, the rails they settle on will capture durable transaction flow, and Coinbase is trying to make x402 the default. The involvement of the major card networks suggests traditional payments incumbents see the same opportunity and do not intend to cede it.

For institutional readers, the practical takeaways are twofold. First, stablecoins are moving from a trading and settlement tool toward a programmable payment primitive, a shift Cryptonite has tracked through developments in agentic payments and stablecoin rails. Second, the accounting, compliance and treasury functions inside businesses will need new tooling to govern spending that no human directly authorises. The broader disruption is already visible in verticals such as agentic AI and crypto reshaping the travel industry. Risks remain, from fraud controls for autonomous spend to the unsettled regulatory treatment of machine-initiated transactions.

Frequently asked questions
