Today, October 31, was supposed to be the end of the road for Mt. Gox creditor repayments. Instead, the Mt. Gox repayment deadline has been pushed one more year, to October 31, 2027, marking the fourth consecutive one-year extension of Japan’s most watched crypto rehabilitation case.
Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi announced the extension in a notice dated October 16, 2026, approved by the Tokyo District Court, with reporting following on October 19-20. The extension changes the timeline — not the amounts owed.
Mt. Gox Repayment Deadline: What Changed and Why
According to the trustee’s stated reasoning, a considerable number of creditors still have not completed the procedures required to receive their repayments, and problems arose during the distribution process. The trustee said remaining creditors should be repaid to the extent reasonably practicable within the new window.
The extension applies to three repayment categories under the 2021 rehabilitation plan:
- Base Repayment
- Early Lump-Sum Repayment
- Intermediate Repayment
Four Extensions in Four Years: The Mt. Gox Timeline
Patience has been the only constant in this saga. The original 2021 plan set an October 31, 2023 deadline. Since then:
- Sept 21, 2023: extended to October 31, 2024
- Oct 10, 2024: extended to October 31, 2025
- Oct 27, 2025: extended to October 31, 2026
- Oct 16, 2026: extended to October 31, 2027 — today’s extension
How Much BTC Is Left in the Estate?
Approximately 34,388 BTC — worth roughly $2.8 billion at recent prices — remained in Mt. Gox estate wallets around the time of the announcement, per blockchain analytics firm Arkham. That figure is a point-in-time estimate, not an official estate balance, and it moves with the market.
Because the deadline is set in Japan Standard Time, October 31, 2027 JST effectively ends on October 30, 2027 for observers elsewhere. The estate operates under a Japanese court-supervised rehabilitation plan, so the extension applies to all eligible claimants, including those in the US and elsewhere, who have completed — or are completing — the required claim procedures.
What the Extension Means for Creditors and Markets
For creditors, the message is familiar: complete your procedures now, not in the final quarter of 2027. For markets, the extension removes a recurring tail-risk talking point — the fear of a dated, forced distribution overhang — and pushes the next deadline ritual an entire year out. A market that has heard this exact announcement four times is unlikely to panic on the news.
The clock resets. The tickets, unfortunately, stay the same.
