GameStop Raises $450 Million, Potentially Boosting Bitcoin Treasury, but Stock Remains Flat

GameStop has raised an additional $450 million through its private convertible note offering, bringing the total raise to $2.7 billion. The funds are intended for general corporate purposes, including investments and acquisitions, with Bitcoin purchases a potential use—though not explicitly confirmed.

If GameStop invested the entire $450 million in Bitcoin at current prices (~$108,000 per BTC), it could nearly double its existing treasury of 4,710 Bitcoin.

Despite this sizable raise and possible Bitcoin buy, GameStop’s shares traded sideways. After the announcement, the stock dipped 2.5% from $23.03 to $22.45 but has since rebounded slightly to $23.55, showing only modest gains in the past week.

This muted response mirrors GameStop’s previous Bitcoin announcement in May, when shares fell about 11% despite plans to buy $500 million worth of Bitcoin. In contrast, companies like Japan’s Metaplanet and Indonesia’s DigiAsia Corp saw their stocks surge after Bitcoin acquisitions—up 22% and 91% respectively—while Paris-based Blockchain Group’s stock skyrocketed 225% after its March Bitcoin buy.

Bitcoin Treasury Moves Alone Are Not Enough

Vincent Liu, CIO of Kronos Research, told that simply buying Bitcoin won’t guarantee success for corporate treasuries. He emphasized the importance of a clear strategy and execution plan: “It’s not just buying Bitcoin. It’s how and why. Without a strong, long-term vision, the impact will be muted.”

Liu added that companies need a well-planned approach to safeguard capital and improve liquidity, warning that “hype or ‘sell the news’ events like GameStop” often fail to create lasting value.

GameStop’s Crypto History and Future

GameStop has previously ventured into crypto with a wallet service and an NFT marketplace, both shut down by early 2024 amid regulatory uncertainties.

The company gained fame as a meme stock after a 2021 short squeeze sent its shares soaring over 1,000% in a single month, fueled by retail investors challenging hedge funds.

While GameStop’s Bitcoin treasury ambitions signal a strategic pivot, the stock market reaction shows investors remain cautious. Clear communication and execution will be critical if GameStop wants to convert crypto interest into sustained shareholder value.
