The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched Operation AI Comply, a new law enforcement sweep targeting companies that have used artificial intelligence (AI) to mislead or deceive consumers. The FTC has filed complaints against five companies, alleging that they employed AI to engage in unfair or deceptive practices that harmed consumers.
One of the companies targeted by the FTC is DoNotPay, which claimed to be the “world’s first robot lawyer.” The FTC alleged that DoNotPay failed to provide valid legal services and made misleading claims about its capabilities. DoNotPay has agreed to settle with the FTC by paying $193,000 and informing consumers about the limitations of its services.
Other companies targeted by the FTC include Ascend Ecom, Ecommerce Empire Builders (EEB), Rytr, and The FBA Machine. These companies were accused of various deceptive practices, such as making false claims about earning potential, generating misleading reviews, and running fraudulent online business schemes.
The FTC’s action against these companies highlights the importance of regulating AI-powered services to protect consumers from deceptive and harmful practices. The agency is sending a clear message that there is no “AI exemption” from the laws on the books and that companies must be transparent and honest in their marketing claims.
