A16z Crypto Opens First Asia Office in South Korea, Citing Strong Regional Adoption and Growth Plans

The prominent crypto venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) Crypto has officially announced the opening of its first Asia-based office in Seoul, South Korea. This expansion is driven by the firm’s goal to support its portfolio companies by tapping into Asia’s highly active cryptocurrency user base.

Focus on Asia’s Crypto Market

A16z Crypto managing partner and COO, Anthony Albanese, emphasized that Asia holds a “particularly strong concentration” of onchain users and represents a significant portion of global crypto activity.

  • The expansion aims to provide go-to-market support, help forge strategic partnerships, and facilitate community building for portfolio companies across the region.
  • Key Adoption Metrics Cited:
    • Nearly one-third of South Korean adults own digital assets.
    • India leads global adoption rankings.
    • Japan has seen a 120% growth in onchain activity over the past year.
    • Singapore boasts one of the world’s highest crypto ownership rates.
    • According to Chainalysis, 11 of the top 20 countries for crypto adoption are in Asia.

Leadership and Future Plans

The new Seoul office will be led by SungMo Park, a former member of Polygon Labs. Park’s role will focus on providing founders with the regional context and knowledge necessary to scale their operations.

  • Albanese stated that this is “just the beginning,” with plans to further grow a16z’s presence, add new capabilities, and explore additional geographic footprints across Asia in the coming years.
  • The move signals that a major industry investor believes future growth lies not just in capital deployment but in being embedded where the users and builders are in the Asian region.

High-Net-Worth Investors Are Increasing Allocations

Further emphasizing the region’s bullish sentiment, a Sygnum survey revealed that six out of ten Asian high-net-worth individuals are prepared to increase their crypto allocations, driven by a strong long-term outlook. The survey also found that 87% of affluent Asian investors already hold crypto.
