BitGo Global Markets Launches Institutional Trading Business Led by Pete Janney

Custody houses keep drifting into trading, and on Wednesday BitGo completed the drift. BitGo Global Markets launched November 4 as a new institutional trading and financial solutions business, pulling liquidity, execution, financing, derivatives and settlement under one roof and naming former NYDIG executive Pete Janney to lead it.

What BitGo Global Markets offers

The service menu is deliberately unglamorous: spot trading, OTC trading, derivatives, financing and settlement. That is the point. Institutions do not want five counterparties and five settlement windows – they want one relationship that spans the trade from execution to custody. BitGo Global Markets is the company’s answer to that shopping list.

The NYDIG team behind the launch

Janney joins BitGo from NYDIG, where he built trading and capital markets experience. He arrives as part of BitGo’s acquisition of NYDIG’s institutional trading business, a deal announced and completed August 27, 2026 that carried over approximately 30 NYDIG employees and a book of institutional client trading relationships – about 250, according to a person familiar cited by CNBC. Terms were not disclosed. NYDIG kept its HPC data centre and power generation business, with CEO Tejas Shah calling the trading unit complementary to BitGo’s infrastructure.

The full-lifecycle pitch

CEO and co-founder Mike Belshe framed the launch around a simple read on demand: institutions increasingly want a trusted partner supporting the full lifecycle of digital assets – custody, trading, financing and settlement. It is the same argument every custodian turned exchange has made, but BitGo is making it as a NYSE-listed company (BTGO), with the reporting obligations that come with it.

Why it matters

BitGo Global Markets arrives in a market where the lines between custody, brokerage and exchange keep dissolving. Banks are building tokenized-asset platforms, exchanges are adding financing desks, and the buyers – funds, treasuries, corporate treasurers – keep consolidating onto fewer, larger relationships. Whoever can clear, finance and hold the same asset without a phone call wins the mandate.

The economics are not trivial: custody alone is a competitive, margin-pressured business, and trading adds inventory risk, credit exposure and a whole new regulatory surface. If the lifecycle pitch works, the reward is stickier clients and more revenue per relationship. If it does not, BitGo has built itself a very expensive bundle. The first quarterly reads as a public company will say which way it is going.
