NBA Strikes CFTC Deal With Kalshi and Polymarket as Prediction Markets Go Mainstream

The NBA named Kalshi and Polymarket its ‘Preferred Prediction Market Exchange of the NBA’ on Monday, becoming the third major North American league to sign a league-level prediction-market deal — and it brought a regulator to the signing table: the league also announced a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Financial terms of the multi-year agreements were not disclosed. The guardrails, on the other hand, were spelled out in detail.

Why the NBA picked Kalshi and Polymarket

The league had been negotiating with both venues since at least April, and had lobbied the CFTC in July for stronger integrity protections than the commission’s then-proposed sports-event contract rules contained. On Monday the CFTC announced the cooperative agreement alongside the NBA, pointing to insider-trading concerns and market-oversight needs around sports event contracts.

What the Kalshi and Polymarket deal actually guards

  • The NBA holds approval rights over which types of markets may be offered on its games.
  • Platforms must show transparency around suspicious trading patterns by users.
  • League and team personnel are banned from trading on league events.
  • Platforms must share information on investigations and suspicious trading — the same playbook the league uses with sportsbook partners.

The NBA is the third league to reach a league-level deal, after the NHL and MLB — whose reported Polymarket agreement from March 2026 was worth up to $300 million over four years. The NFL has not signed a comparable league-wide deal.

Prediction markets spent years asking to be taken seriously as market infrastructure. On Monday, a league with billion-dollar broadcast rights walked up and signed the guest book — with the regulator holding the pen.
