Switzerland Approves Its First Spot Bitcoin ETF for SIX Listing

Switzerland has cleared its first spot Bitcoin ETF, ending a long wait for a Swiss-domiciled fund that holds bitcoin directly instead of merely waving at it from the sidelines. The country’s financial regulator FINMA approved the Bitcoin Fund ETF — ticker BBIT — from Zurich-based BIT Asset Management on October 20, with trading expected to begin on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November.

The fund is the first exchange-traded fund under Swiss law to invest directly in bitcoin. Switzerland already lists physically backed bitcoin exchange-traded products, but those are products, not funds — a difference that matters to regulators, tax filers, and anyone who has ever won an argument with a custodian over terminology.

What the First Spot Bitcoin ETF Brings to SIX

BBIT is approved for public offering in Switzerland and is open to retail investors, a notably wider door than the qualified-investor-only crypto basket fund BIT AM launched in 2021. The firm markets BBIT as Europe’s only spot bitcoin ETF — a claim that was true of the landscape at approval time, though other providers have already filed or announced their own applications with FINMA, so the crown may be short-lived.

Approval rests on an exemption from FINMA’s diversification rules, justified by bitcoin’s long trading history and deep volume relative to other crypto assets. The regulator paired the green light with its standard warning: investors could lose a significant share of their capital. Some things are eternal.

Why FINMA Said Yes This Time

FINMA kept the issuer’s name confidential in its own announcement; BIT Asset Management later claimed the honor publicly through a press release on October 22. Fee, custodian, and retail distribution partner remain undisclosed at this stage, which leaves the marketing deck with at least one conspicuous blank.

For a market that has spent October debating outflows, rate-hike bets, and geopolitics, a fresh European venue for direct bitcoin exposure is a quiet milestone. The first spot Bitcoin ETF on Swiss soil gives retail investors something they have watched US and Canadian peers enjoy for years — and gives the rest of Europe a checkpoint to argue about.
