US spot bitcoin ETF inflows reached $528.4 million on Wednesday, the third straight session of gains, while ether funds posted about $14.9 million of inflows and ended a five-day outflow run.
It is the friendliest flow tape the market has seen in weeks – and it arrived even as bitcoin itself chopped around the low $80,000s.
Where the money went
Per SoSoValue data reported October 22:
- Bitcoin ETFs: +$528.4M on the day, capping a three-session streak worth roughly $1.08 billion (Monday $526.6M, Tuesday $23M, Wednesday $528M).
- Issuer split: BlackRock’s IBIT took in $235M and Fidelity’s FBTC $212M – together about 85% of the day’s haul. Grayscale and Bitwise funds added a combined $51.2M; VanEck, Morgan Stanley, Invesco and WisdomTree reported no flows.
- Ether ETFs: +$14.9M, the first positive session after five consecutive days of outflows, led by the Grayscale ETH fund (+$28.1M) and Fidelity’s FETH (+$13M), with outflows elsewhere netting the total down.
- Also in the tape: Solana ETFs added roughly $585,000 to snap a 13-day outflow streak; XRP ETFs took in about $709,000.
Cumulatively, US spot bitcoin ETFs hold roughly $58 billion of net inflows since their January 2024 launch, with about $109.3 billion in total net assets.
Price context
Bitcoin briefly pushed above $84,700 on the flow day before retreating, and traded above $81,900 early Thursday, down about 1.5% over 24 hours. So the flows and the chart are telling slightly different stories – institutions nibbling while the tape consolidates.
Why the reversal matters
October has not been kind to crypto funds: outflows topped $1 billion earlier in the month, and a single October 16 session saw all four major funds post redemptions. Three green days in a row, plus an ether reversal, is the first credible sign that the month’s selling pressure may be exhausting rather than compounding.
The honest caveat: two strong days do not make a trend, and Wednesday’s number was nearly identical to Monday’s, with a near-flat Tuesday in between. Watch whether Thursday’s print extends the streak – a fourth consecutive inflow day would say more than any single headline figure.
What traders are watching next
Three things decide whether these bitcoin ETF inflows become a durable turn: consistency across issuers beyond IBIT and FBTC, whether ether flows hold positive for a second session, and whether bitcoin can reclaim the mid-$80,000s without the flows drying up. Until then, call it a relief rally in the fund data – welcome, but not yet a regime change.
