The wait ends in regulatory terms, if not trading terms: Thailand’s Bitcoin ETF framework takes effect on October 16, 2026, opening the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) to spot funds that track bitcoin and ether for the first time.
Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission finalized the regime on October 8, and it becomes enforceable today. The package lands in 11 notifications – five from the Capital Market Supervisory Board and six from the SEC office, including Notification Sor Nor. 15/2569, which names the two eligible cryptocurrencies at launch.
What the Thailand Bitcoin ETF rules actually say
The framework is deliberately narrow, and deliberately so:
- Venue: the SET is the only permitted listing venue.
- Issuers: licensed Thai asset management companies only.
- Assets at launch: bitcoin and ether; other coins may be added later by notification.
- Structure: passively managed, tracking a single crypto asset, with at least 80% average annual net exposure to that asset.
- Guardrails: derivatives barred as a substitute for direct holdings, margin loans banned for crypto ETF purchases, and a mandatory risk acknowledgment before any trade.
- Fund access: mutual funds and private funds may hold the ETFs within existing investment limits.
Overseas crypto ETFs remain off-limits for Thai brokers serving retail clients, and depositary receipts tied to foreign crypto ETFs are not permitted in phase one – Bangkok wants the exposure built at home.
Why no ETF starts trading today
An effective date is not a launch date. Even with the rulebook live, asset managers must still satisfy the requirements, obtain SEC approval and meet listing rules before any product begins trading. No issuer, ticker or launch date has been announced. The regulatory door is open; the funds are still putting their shoes on.
What happens next
Three things to watch: which Thai asset managers file first, whether any product clears approval before year-end, and whether the eligible-asset list expands beyond BTC and ETH once the market proves the plumbing works. The October 16 milestone also matters regionally – it makes Thailand the newest Asian jurisdiction with a live spot crypto ETF regime, even as neighbors move at different speeds.
Why it matters
For an exchange that spent years treating crypto as a side dish, hosting spot bitcoin and ether ETFs is a menu rewrite. The rules are conservative by design – no leverage, no derivatives stand-ins, risk acknowledgments in triplicate – which is exactly the pitch to regulators who watched other markets learn those lessons the hard way.
