Fiserv Digital Asset Platform Goes Live for Community Banks
The Fiserv digital asset platform for community banks went live on October 1, 2026, with the Bank of North Dakota’s Roughrider Coin as the first stablecoin to run on it. Fiserv, a leading payment technology company in community banking, ended a period of silence and speculation about the project’s future by shipping the real thing: VersaBank, an OCC-chartered institution, and Fireblocks handle minting, burning, custody and reserve asset management, while Fiserv provides white-label infrastructure. The pilot involves over 90 participating banks and credit unions in North Dakota — a practical demonstration of the thesis that stablecoins cannot scale without the institutional weight of banks.
The platform is enabled through existing technology at no additional cost to clients and is accessible via the Fiserv Commercial Center. It offers capabilities for stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, programmable commerce, treasury automation, tokenized deposits, and global currency accounts. However, the current reality is a regional pilot, with scaling to the 6 million merchant locations Fiserv serves being a different order of magnitude.
Regulatory clarity comes from the GENIUS Act, which creates a specific framework for state-qualified issuers under $10 billion — the lane the Fiserv digital asset platform was built to operate in. Sunil Sachdev, head of embedded finance and digital assets at Fiserv, called the launch “an important milestone for Fiserv and the financial institutions we serve,” adding that “by moving from concept to production with leading institutions, we are helping clients unlock new efficiencies in banking and payments while maintaining the trust, security and regulatory standards they expect.”
The transition from Michael Lyons to Takis Georgakopoulos as CEO suggests that while the technology is live, the strategic direction of the firm’s digital asset ambitions may still be in flux. For now, however, the plumbing works.
