Japan’s SBI Holdings Hits ¥10 Trillion AUM, Driven by Index Funds and Blockchain Strategy

Japanese financial giant SBI Holdings has reached a major milestone, announcing that its assets under management (AUM) have hit ¥10 trillion ($66 billion), achieving the goal months ahead of schedule. Chairman Yoshitaka Kitao called the achievement the start of a “new phase of growth” as the company focuses on merging traditional asset management with financial technology.

Strategy: Index Funds and Diverse Offerings

SBI’s growth is attributed to a methodical strategy of product expansion and consistent retail inflows, rather than speculative trading:

  • Flagship Success: The SBI V S&P 500 Index Fund has become a key driver, managing approximately ¥2.5 trillion and appealing to Japanese retail investors seeking U.S. market exposure.
  • Emerging Market Focus: New funds, including the SBI Global Equity Index Fund and the SBI iShares India Equity Index Fund, have capitalized on renewed optimism in emerging markets.
  • Alternative Strategies: The firm has diversified into gold, dividend, and technology funds, with its Next Generation Technology Strategy Fund returning over 20% in its first month.

Expansion and Tech Integration

SBI has bolstered its AUM through strategic integration and global partnerships:

  • Acquisition & Subsidiaries: The inclusion of SBI Okasan Asset Management added billions, bringing in popular robo-advised and currency-based platforms like the ROBOPRO Fund and Foreign Currency MMF (USD).
  • Global Reach: The U.S.-based Carret Asset Management is strengthening SBI’s presence in overseas markets.

The Role of Blockchain and Ripple (XRP)

A central component of SBI’s long-term strategy is its deep commitment to blockchain technology:

  • SBI Ripple Asia: The group has spent years building infrastructure using XRP to connect digital assets with real-world payment systems, moving beyond basic transfers into deeper financial services.
  • Major XRP Investment: This alliance is expanding through a $200 million investment in Evernorth Holdings, a U.S. company backed by Ripple Labs. Evernorth plans to purchase over $1 billion in XRP and is expected to manage over 560 million XRP after its planned Q1 2026 Nasdaq listing (ticker: XRPN).

This collaboration underscores SBI’s belief that the future of asset management lies in the seamless integration of blockchain technology with traditional finance.

Looking Ahead

SBI Global Asset Management has set an ambitious new target of ¥20 trillion in AUM by 2028. The firm plans to achieve this by scaling its low-cost index products, boosting digital investor engagement, and pursuing strategic acquisitions. As Kitao stated, the ¥10 trillion milestone is “not an end—it’s a beginning.”
