TON Blockchain Eyes U.S. Expansion Amid Trump’s Crypto-Friendly Stance

The TON blockchain, initially developed by the messaging app Telegram, is gearing up for a major push into the U.S. market. This move comes amid expectations of a more crypto-friendly regulatory environment following the recent election.

From Telegram to The Open Network:

Originally known as the Telegram Open Network (TON), the Layer 1 blockchain was conceived as a platform for in-app payments and other services within the Telegram ecosystem, boasting over 950 million users. However, legal battles with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) led Telegram to abandon the project, returning $1.2 billion to investors and paying an $18.5 million fine.

A Second Life:

Despite the setbacks, the open-source nature of the TON technology allowed independent developers to continue its development. The Switzerland-based TON Foundation emerged as a key entity, focusing on projects outside the U.S.

U.S. Expansion on the Horizon:

Now, the TON Foundation is setting its sights on the U.S. market. Manuel Stotz, the newly appointed Foundation President and founder of investment management firm Kingsway Capital Partners, believes the U.S. is poised to become a global crypto hub, emphasizing innovation.

Growth and Success:

The TON blockchain has experienced significant growth, with daily transactions increasing from 100,000 to 1.2 million. Its ecosystem now boasts over 1,400 decentralized applications (DApps), according to CoinMarketCap.

Challenges and Uncertainties:

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, the driving force behind the original TON project, faces legal troubles, including charges related to drug trafficking and child pornography. While Durov has no official role in the TON Foundation, his legal woes have raised concerns about the project’s future given its historical ties to Telegram.

Market Performance:

The price of Toncoin, the native cryptocurrency of the TON blockchain, initially dipped following Durov’s arrest but has since recovered. It currently trades around $5.39, having reached a high of $6.81 in December 2023.
