Solana Proposes “Lattice-Based” Hashing to Scale to Billions of Accounts

Solana developers have proposed a groundbreaking solution to a critical scalability challenge: handling billions of user accounts. The proposal introduces a “lattice-based” hashing system that revolutionizes how the blockchain tracks and verifies account states.

Addressing the “State Growth Problem”

Currently, blockchains like Solana must regularly recalculate the entire state of all user accounts, a process that becomes increasingly burdensome as the network grows. This “state growth problem” has been a major obstacle to mainstream adoption. Co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko explained the issue: “New account creation has to actually create new accounts. Which means that a new account has to prove that it is new somehow.”

The Accounts Lattice Hash Solution

The proposed Accounts Lattice Hash upgrade addresses this by enabling instant account state verification without the need for extensive recalculations. It leverages “homomorphic hashing,” an advanced cryptographic technique that allows the network to update its state verification by only processing changed accounts. This dramatically reduces computational overhead while maintaining the same high level of security.

Benefits and Implementation

  • Scalability: Enables Solana to support billions of accounts, a crucial step towards mass adoption.
  • Efficiency: Significantly reduces computational resources required for state verification.
  • Security: Maintains the same 128-bit security level as the existing system.

Early implementations by validator clients Agave and Firedancer have demonstrated the practical viability of the new system. The upgrade will be introduced through Solana’s formal improvement process, requiring network-wide activation through validator voting. A gradual rollout is recommended, allowing nodes to pre-compute the new hashing system before full activation.

Potential Impact

If approved, this groundbreaking innovation could set a new standard for blockchain scalability, potentially influencing how other networks approach similar scaling challenges. This development marks a significant step forward for Solana and the broader blockchain ecosystem.
