Soneium, a new Ethereum rollup backed by Sony and Startale Labs, is poised to make blockchain technology accessible to the broader public. Led by Sota Watanabe, CEO of Startale Labs and founder of Astar Network, Soneium aims to revolutionize Web3 adoption with a focus on user-friendly technology.

A New Vision for Blockchain Adoption

Sota Watanabe has redefined the popular Web3 greeting "GM," traditionally standing for "good morning," to signify "go mainstream." This reflects his mission to bring blockchain technology into the mainstream, making it relevant and useful for everyday users. Soneium, developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs in collaboration with Startale Labs, embodies this vision by targeting broader accessibility beyond the tech-savvy.

Upcoming Launch and Technical Shifts

The Soneium project is set to introduce its "Minato" public testnet soon after the WebX 2024 conference in Japan. Watanabe highlights that Soneium will play a crucial role in making blockchain technology more accessible, aiming to bridge the gap between niche technology and mainstream use. “The industry lacks a real distribution channel,” Watanabe noted. “We’re building a blockchain that’s accessible for the general public, who will use it over the next decade.”

Soneium marks Startale Labs' third blockchain initiative, following the Astar Network layer-1 Polkadot parachain and the Ethereum layer-2 Astar zkEVM. However, with Soneium, Astar Network will transition to an optimistic rollup using the OP Stack. This shift from its previous reliance on Polygon is driven by the OP Stack’s reputation for stability and proven performance, despite technical challenges with blockchain reorganizations (reorgs) encountered by Astar.

Technical and Strategic Advantages

The decision to switch to the OP Stack was influenced by its higher capacity and more stable performance compared to the Astar zkEVM, which could handle only three to four transactions per second (TPS). While the OP Mainnet has experienced some stability issues, Watanabe is confident that it will offer the reliability required to support major players like Sony in the Web3 space.

Sources close to the deal suggest that financial incentives from Optimism also played a role in securing the partnership with Sony. Bitwise reached out to Optimism for clarification on this aspect. Regardless, Soneium will integrate into the Superchain, a network of OP Stack rollups, alongside other leading projects like Base.

Support and Collaboration

Soneium will also introduce Spark, an incubation program aimed at supporting developers with mentorship, technical assistance, and funding opportunities, including investments of up to $100,000 for eligible projects. This initiative underscores the commitment to fostering innovation within the Web3 ecosystem.Sony is deeply invested in Soneium, contributing resources from its Web3 team of 30-50 software engineers and providing essential infrastructure support. This collaboration followed nearly 18 months of discussions, reflecting Sony’s dedication to advancing Web3 technology.

Watanabe expressed his admiration for Optimism’s open-source technology and leadership, stating, “We’ve been talking with Optimism executives, and I have great respect for them because they are genuinely trying to change society. Sony is eager to work with them.” This sentiment highlights the collaborative spirit driving the Soneium project and its broader goals within the Web3 ecosystem.

Soneium represents a significant step towards mainstream blockchain adoption, combining Sony's resources with Startale Labs' innovative approach to make Web3 technology more accessible and impactful.
