OpenAI has begun rolling out its highly anticipated "Advanced Voice" feature to select ChatGPT users, with Plus and Team subscribers receiving access throughout the week. This new feature, an upgrade to the latest ChatGPT 4.0 model, enhances communication speed and introduces five new humanlike voices—Arbor, Maple, SXol, Spruce, and Vale—alongside existing options like Breeze and Ember.
The Advanced Voice mode allows users to interact more intuitively, including the ability to interrupt conversations and change topics seamlessly. Furthermore, OpenAI has integrated custom instructions and memory capabilities, enabling the chatbot to remember previous interactions and adapt to user preferences. However, the experience isn’t yet optimized for in-car use, as noise can disrupt conversations.
While many users are excited about the upgrade, some have expressed disappointment that the new voice options do not match the much-discussed, now-shelved "Sky" voice model. This model was initially planned after discussions with actress Scarlett Johansson, who later voiced her discontent over its resemblance to her own voice, prompting Altman to abandon the project. Despite the controversies, OpenAI continues to innovate, aiming to create more lifelike interactions for users.
