The newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, is facing a legal challenge just as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump takes office. The agency, created to reduce government spending and streamline regulations, is being sued for alleged violations of federal transparency laws.

National Security Counselors, a public interest law firm, has filed a lawsuit accusing DOGE of not adhering to the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA). This law mandates that advisory committees to executive branches follow specific disclosure, hiring, and public meeting rules.

In the legal complaint, Kel McClanahan, executive director of the law firm, argues that DOGE’s meetings, including those conducted electronically, must be open to the public. The firm points out that similar government agencies are required to record meeting minutes and allow public attendance. McClanahan stated that DOGE is not exempt from FACA’s requirements.

Memecoin Impact and DOGE’s Popularity

The name similarity between the new agency and the Dogecoin (DOGE) memecoin has caught the attention of cryptocurrency investors. The agency’s formation coincided with significant attention on the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, especially given Musk’s ongoing advocacy for the memecoin. Musk’s involvement with DOGE has helped elevate Dogecoin’s market cap, even surpassing Porsche’s $56 billion market value.

Musk’s political role has also been a key driver for memecoin traders, as they view the DOGE agency’s creation as a potential catalyst for Dogecoin's further growth.

Political Leadership and the Agency's Goals

In addition to Musk’s leadership, Trump appointed Vivek Ramaswamy tohelp head the agency and improve g overnment efficiency. Ramaswamy, known for his pro-cryptocurrency stance, had previously called for mass deregulation of the crypto industry during his presidential campaign before dropping out in January 2024.

The DOGE agency’s stated mission is to “slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies,” according to the announcement made on November 12. Its operations are set to conclude by July 4, 2026, with a goal of achieving a "smaller government with more efficiency and less bureaucracy."

A new plan for government restructuring is scheduled to be presented on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

Despite the lawsuit, which challenges DOGE’s compliance with transparency laws, the agency’s formation and its connection to Dogecoin have captured the attention of both crypto enthusiasts and political observers alike. The success of the lawsuit and the agency’s future developments remain to be seen, but its implications for government reform and cryptocurrency’s role in politics are already sparking significant discussions.
