Hong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange HashKey has secured a significant milestone by obtaining a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license from the Central Bank of Ireland. This development, announced on January 7, 2025, through HashKey Europe Limited, marks the company's entry into the European market.

The Irish license authorizes HashKey to engage in a wide range of cryptocurrency-related activities within Ireland, including:

  • Facilitation of fiat-to-crypto and crypto-to-crypto trading.
  • Provision of custodial wallet services.
  • Management of virtual asset transfers on behalf of clients.

This move aligns with the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) Regulation, which mandates that all crypto service providers operating within the EU obtain a VASP license by December 30, 2024.

Strategic Expansion and Regulatory Compliance

HashKey views this Irish license as a critical step in strengthening its global presence. By securing regulatory approval in Ireland, HashKey joins a distinguished group of crypto companies, including Ripple, Paysafe, MoonPay, Gemini, and Coinbase, that have also received approval from the Irish Central Bank.

The VASP license subjects HashKey to rigorous regulatory scrutiny, including stringent Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) requirements. The company must also demonstrate robust operational resilience, secure protocols, and the integrity of its management team. Furthermore, the license mandates enhanced reporting obligations, particularly concerning large transactions, to ensure transparency and adherence to regulatory norms.

Ireland's Commitment to Crypto Innovation

This development underscores Ireland's commitment to fostering a secure and innovative environment for the crypto sector. Irish Central Bank Governor Derville Rowland previously emphasized Ireland's ambition to maintain its status as a secure and innovative financial hub in the era of digital assets.
